The Golden Pomegranate - A Yemenite Historical Novel
The book "The Pomegranate Pendant" by Dvora Waysman has been made into an Israeli movie starring Timna Brauer, Galit Giat, Hadar Ozeri, Ophir Nahari, Mati Seri, Aviv Alush, Matti Atlas, Michael Moshanov and Achinoam (NOA) Nini.
Mazal, a Jewish child-bride from Yemen, preserves her religion, culture, family and her unique art, surviving the harsh, violent conditions of Jerusalem and the Holy Land in the late 19th through the mid-20th centuries. She becomes the mother of two, a young widow, and the family's breadwinner through her skills as a jeweler in gold and silver. This stirring saga spans four generations of a family of Yemenite goldsmiths at the vortex of history in the Land of Israel. For the first time in a feature motion picture, the fabulous story of Israel's rebirth is graphically portrayed through the extraordinary saga of a Yemenite family's struggles to survive and thrive in Jerusalem from the late 19th Century through the Israeli War of Independence.

Coming to Israel? Want to add interest to your tour or have a fun family day? Stop and see the
artist at work creating Handmade Artisan Jewelry, Filigree Jewelry, Ethnic Jewelry, Roman Glass Jewelry & Judaica all displayed in our Gallery by the Mediterranean Sea in Beautiful Old Jaffa.
Plan your trip with a special visit to Ben-Zion David's Gallery & Workshop in the Artist's quarter of Old Jaffa and take home a piece of Yemenite Filigree with a wonderful story and an experience you'll never forget.
All Ben-Zion's jewelry is Handmade from Sterling Silver. Watch the artist prepare the silver threads himself, interweaving them to the left and to the right in order to achieve that special and unique braided effect.
Ben-Zion explains:
"My filigree jewelry is made using a very old technique that is disappearing from our world. Creating a masterpiece requires attention to fine details, great imagination and of course, patience. Each piece is decorated with swirling wires and actually, many can be made out of a single strand.
By twisting the silver threads, bending and interweaving them into different shapes, a bracelet or a pair of earrings can be created right before your eyes. It is really very magical to begin with a simple wire and finish with a work of art."
Ben-Zion's workshop and gallery have turned into a popular destination for buyers and tourists from all over the world. In addition to his work as a jewelry designer, Ben-Zion lectures frequently about the fading art of the traditional Yemenite silversmith. Demonstrations are given once a week or by appointment.
